Development of a novel microneedle platform for biomarker assessment of atopic dermatitis patients

Background Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease whose pathogenesis, cause, and treatment have been extensively studied. The association of AD with Th2 cytokines well known; therefore, the analysis this crucial for diagnosis AD. This study aimed to present new method measuring protein biomarkers in patients AD, before after treatment, using minimally invasive microneedles. Materials methods First, hyaluronic acid-loaded microneedle patches (HA-MNs) sample collection were fabricated. Next, Institutional Review Board approval, 20 recruited samples taken four different sampling techniques: (1) tape stripping, (2) hydrocolloid patches, (3) hollow microneedles, (4) HA-MNs. Lastly, proteins isolated from collected samples, AD-related analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results Proteins successfully extracted HA-MNs, except Interleukin (IL)-4, IL-13, interferon-γ detected HA-MNs only. By comparing biomarker level correlation improvement score patients, we observed significant negative between IL-4 IL-13 an symptoms. Conclusion Overall, our results verified that can be used effectively analyze levels metabolites applied monitor progress manner.
